Marriage And Its Effect To The Economy

Marriage is the process of uniting two individuals through law and religion, and it also supports an influence in economic development. The provided proof is visible by browsing through records, surveys, and demographic data. These pieces of evidence are difficult to connect, but this article will give you a thorough understanding of the effects of marriage on the economy.

Research and Studies

The marriage rate has direct effects on several economic subjects such as gross domestic products (GDP), upward economic movement, child poverty levels, and the median income of a family. Research conducted by economists pointed out that various modern commercial and industrial sectors have experienced progress in profit when individuals get married and build a family of their own. These key sectors include food and groceries, insurance, childcare, home maintenance, household services, and household products.  As additional information, these sectors are negatively affected when marriage and birth rates are low.

Marriage VS Cohabitating

Some reports show that couples who practice cohabitation are less stable compared to the couples who decided to get married.  The set of norms in marriage include mutual aid, compromise, sacrifice, and loyalty is less likely to be present in cohabitation. The freedom and flexibility of cohabitation sacrifices the commitment and long-term orientation that is present in a marriage. It allows stability resulting from the couples’ marital involvement and long-term adjustment.

Positive Effects

There are various reasons which show that marriage and family building matters to the economy.  It somehow presents a new set of goals that couples will eventually aim to achieve. Men that decided to get married tend to work harder and smarter to attain financial stability. They become eager to earn more income compared to their peers that stay single. It is due to the responsibility and obligation which comes hand in hand with marriage. Also, married men and women are less likely to break the law compared to single individuals because they tend to be more occupied in thinking of ways on how to make their lives more stable.

Children coming from intact families with married parents have better chances of acquiring what they need to become productive individuals that strengthen the economy. Marriage supports children by providing encouraging values and social skills that focus on advantages that are useful within their unit. It gives children a good boost of educational growth which helps in reducing the chance of dropping out of school because parents can somehow sustain emotional and psychological assistance. Therefore, it positively affects the number of competent working individuals in the future. Marriage also supports a healthy population because couples tend to become responsible enough to consider children as a product of controlled birth and family planning. The children born from marriage ensure the positive population growth of a nation.

The concept of marriage is different around the world. However, the positive effect it does towards the economy is unchangeable. As such, every nation should promote marriage than the cohabitation of couples. It is the right thing to do logically and emotionally.
